Electrical Patent Engineer Summer Intern

Hanley, Flight & Zimmerman, a boutique Intellectual Property Law firm located in downtown Chicago, is looking for interested Electrical Engineering students to join their team of patent attorneys and patent engineers. This is a summer intern position which exposes the Engineering student to the world of domestic and foreign patent prosecution. Interested individuals must have a sound electrical engineering foundation. HFZ will provide opportunities for the intern to be exposed to IP content such as invention disclosures, patent searching, patent drawing, preparation of Office Action Responses, performance of technical research, preparation of Information Disclosure Statements, claim study, prosecution and legal strategy, inventor and patent examiner interviews, and clerical and file support services. The summer internship is a window into the world of patent prosecution, demonstrating in a hands-on, real-world way,  what it is like to work in a professional patent prosecution and counseling law firm.

Electrical/Electrical & Computer Engineering background required. Solid academic performance (preferably 3.3 GPA or higher). Qualified candidates should have an avid interest in patent law and be proficient with Microsoft Office. No prior law firm experience required. Candidate will receive ample on the job training.

Patent Prosecution Legal Assistant

Hanley, Flight & Zimmerman, an Intellectual Property Law firm located in downtown Chicago, is seeking an experienced, full-time legal assistant to join its administrative support staff.

Duties Include:

  • preparing and filing documents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office
  • communicating with clients and foreign attorneys
  • maintaining physical and digital files
  • managing attorney dockets

The assistant will typically work with one to three patent practitioners. Very little overtime is required. Our firm provides a competitive salary, a great benefits package and a friendly work environment.

Requirements:

  • a 4-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • 1-3 years of work experience in a law office environment.
  • paralegal certification preferred, but not required.
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with team members as well as clients.
  • the ability to be well organized and timely manage multiple tasks.
  • proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat required.

This is not an entry-level position. However, we do provide extensive on-the-job training.
